Citizen Kane is no longer the greatest film ever made. The Sight and Sound survey, the authority on such matters now has a new greatest film of all time, Hitchcock’s Vertigo.
For my money, Vertigo is a strange choice. I think Rear Window and Notorious are far stronger and better films than Vertigo. Still, it’s nice to have a Hitchcock film take the number one spot. In my small opinion, Alfred Hitchcock is the greatest director to ever live. His films through the 40’s and 50’s had a remarkable consistency to their quality. Even his films that don’t quite work like Suspicion are worth watching at least once.
Now we can have pretentious indy game developers talk about how there needs to be a Vertigo of video games instead of a Citizen Kane. Finally an end to that miserable cliche. Oh wait, indy game developers don’t know what the fuck they are talking about and know less about great film. Regardless, why not celebrate by watching Vertigo sometime? While you’re at it, check out North by Northwest and The Birds too.
