Like most Americans I’ve been trying to enjoy the Olympics. The keyword there being “trying.” NBC is making it a lot more difficult to enjoy the Olympics than it should be. I wanted to watch them, but at this point I honestly just don’t give a shit. Between the excessive commercialism, the inane commentary and the fact that I’m watching pre-taped events that I already know the results for, this whole thing can be chalked up to one of life’s little lessons. Never let NBC cover the Olympics. Ever.
NBC is doing incredible damage to the Olympic brand. Even people in other countries are calling out NBC on their bullshit. Watching NBC cover the Olympics is like watching a kid who can’t swim flop around in a kiddie pool on television. You sit their with your mouth agape in horror and astonishment, praying that someone comes along and pulls the kid out of the water before he drowns.
In a way this a good thing. Its a very public and worldwide acknowledgement that the people on TV are fucking idiots. To steal a line from Mamet, Bob Costas couldn’t find his dick if it was stapled to a map. Matt Lauer is even worse. It’s not just NBC either. Have you ever watched Wolf Blitzer on CNN? The man barely has a functioning brain. I swear, sometimes it seems like he doesn’t even comprehend the words that he is reading off the teleprompter.
For anyone who needs proof that world is run by people who have no idea what the fuck they are doing, here you go. The curtain has been torn down and Oz has been revealed. It’s all just smoke and mirrors really.
When I was a kid, I assumed that educators and adults knew things that I didn’t. Since educators were people in authority, I assumed that they had a clear understanding of the world I was still trying to figure out, that they were given these positions because they had the ability to translate this crazy world to us and prepare us for it. Then in Eighth grade, circumstances forced the realization that they were just making it up as they went along. Some of them were just people caught in the waves of life, doing the best they could with the hand they were dealt. Others were just incredibly stupid and didn’t know jack about shit. They were just good at projecting an authoritative intelligence without ever having one.
There really is no difference between Matt Lauer and your standard, high school guidance counselor. The only difference is one is on TV and the other is not. Wolf Blitzer isn’t on CNN because he’s a great journalist. He’s on CNN because he looks okay on camera and will read off the teleprompter without having any thoughts of his own. Radley Balko is a great journalist. But he has opinions of his own. Ones that are not approved or given to him by corporate media.
I could probably go outside and pick three random people off the street who could do a better job at commentating the Olympics than the morons at NBC. It’s one of those little lies that we keep telling ourselves to keep us sane. Bob Costas is going to call the Olympics because he’s the best man at NBC for the job. Then he and his colleagues botch the job so incompetently were are forced to face the truth. The reason why Bob Costas is on TV and Bob Schmoe is in a trailer is because one of them kissed the right ass at the right time.
But Bob Costas looks like a genius compared to the executives at NBC. These fucking people thought it would be a good idea to forsake the showing of the events live for a primetime highlight reel. The idiocy is astounding. I can go on London2012’s website and read all of the results in realtime, but can’t watch them until they edit it for the American public. It’s making the America look stupid and ridiculous. It’s fucking treasonous is what it is.
Now that NBC has flushed America’s rep further down the toilet than it already was, they can get around to exploiting the temporary, worldwide goodwill that the Olympics brings. I don’t fault NBC for making a profit by selling airtime to advertisers during the Olympic broadcast, that’s how television works. But Christ, they don’t have to be so soulless about it.
There is a slight difference between making good on your investment and sheer fucking greed. In today’s corporate world, profit is not enough. You have to scorch the earth to find every single nickel that you can get your greedy little fingers on. If it means destroying your reputation and potentially damaging your relationship with potential opportunities, so be it. Why should they worry about future loss? The US government will just bail them out with taxpayer money anyway. It doesn’t matter.
It’s not as if the Olympics are clean in this regard either. The Olympics took corporate sponsor whoring to an insane level with taping over brand names of toilets in bathrooms, because they weren’t official Olympic sponsors. Is there an official Olympic urinal? If so, which brand is it? Hell, I’m not even sure if I’m allowed to write the word “Olympics” without violating some sort of international copyright law these days. That’s how ridiculous corporatism has gotten.
Logic and rationality have been abandoned. NBC executives would rather live in a fantasy world of their own creation than deal with the real world where things like Twitter and the internet exist. How can there be any great Olympic moments if the entire world can’t live it together? The spirit of the Olympics is meant to be shared in all countries across the entire world simultaneously. It’s something we are supposed to enjoy as a species, together as one.
NBC’s stance? Fuck sharing, even if it is good will for all of humankind.
